I guess about two or three hour drive north of Mumbai is what in many countries would be a good-sized city, but in India seems barely to be noticed. It's a bathing town with ghats and temples on the river and I had a blast here. One of my favorite places in India, I think. The city is very alive, the waterfront is so much more than bustling, I don't know what other word I can use for it. As was the case through most of my India trip this summer, I saw ZERO tourists which is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your mood, I guess. The people were very friendly, no touts, no invitations to visit shops or showrooms. Stayed at a lovely shithole of a hotel called the something or other and just had a great time. Smoked dope with a guy outside of a temple whose handleers told me was 104 years old. He reminded me a bit of Richie Havens, as you will see in the pics below. But Nasik is amazing. GO if you get a chance.
That way!
Bathing
Nice colors
A bunch of stoned holy men
Up close
Ganja!
I was a little bit in love with her
And her sister
Saw this guy wandering through the town
She was selling something
This was in a garage by a school
Nicely done chalking
This grandmother was thrilled to be photographed
Hindu iconography is always full of surprises
Here's the first holy man to pass me some dope. Doesn't he look like Richie Havens?
His friend here looks a lot like Manson
You see the strangest statues in India
This woman thought it absolutely hilarious that I was photographing Nasik, so I photographed her
A Muslim shop in very very Hindu Nakis
These adorable girls chatted me up on the way to the ghats
Down by the ghats
A temple by the water
Same temple, different wall, different sun
Same temple, out fhe front door, out of focus
A different temple
Sari drying
Playing in the river
Riverside temple
It was so alive down by the water
Nice faces
You don't get much happier than this
Goofing the American
I don't think her wave of disgust is directed at me, but it sure looks like it is
Oy
This guy wanted a photo
This is his wife. She did not want one and ran, but I got her anyway
Inside a temple, you have to crawl through tiny, tiny spaces to get to this.
