Djenne

Easily the highlight of the trip. This is a great town. The mosque itself is amazing, of course, but the town too is really very picturesque, and as my friend Robin once said of Varanasi, very atmospheric. It's just a great place to hang out. Tons of narrow streets winding through the city. Lots of beautiful, austere mud brick architecture. The touts are annoying, but not so bad. Not much worse than Bobo. It's also a great place to go motorbiking out in the villages. Saw some very nice tribal outposts. I stayed three days, could have stayed five or six if I had the time.
