These are two neighborhoods between Sheikh Zayed Road and the water. Some of the housing is really spectacular, new villas, and some if it is beautiful old and sort of run down. It's more what you expect Dubai to look like: the oil kingdom look. I meant to ride through the neighborhoods more, but I just got too enthralled with the beach front stuff and then I got too hot and had to come back home before I died of heat stroke.

A hotel they are building right next to the Burj and the Jumeirah Beach
The Burj al Arab, in all its glory. (Burj, I've learned, means 'tower' in Arabic. So, the Arabian Tower)
Slightly less gloroius seen through all the construction
i don't particularly like either one of them, as far as a place to live. they are like the suburbs. jumeirah less so, but only in certain parts. umm suqueim is a rich, expat, villa ghetto with nothing much of interest to offer, unless you enjoy walled compounds and meticulously maintained roads with terrible traffic. jumeirah has some areas where you can, gasp!, actually WALK places. but again: villas and compounds and traffic. but the traffic is teribble everywhere. the authorities have recently announced they will begin working on it,and we can all expect it to be absolutely nightmarish until 2006.
if i was going to move here, as your question implies, i would look at Satwa and Karama. Deira if you REALLY don't mind traffic.
