What a great city; what a great surprise. I don't think I had any idea of what Algiers would be like. The only images I'd ever seen were in a black and white and filmed half a century ago for the film, The Battle for Algiers. So it was a great surprise to arrive in what I think is one of the most beautiful cities I've certainly ever seen. I had only a 12 hour layover on my way home to Dubai from Burkina Faso, but I got a transit visa and went into town. I checked into a cheap hotel by the corniche (1300 dinars), slept for about an hour waiting for the sun to come up -- I arrived at 5:30 am. And then when it did I went and walked around until about 12:30 and then had lunch at an exquisite little restaurant and then went back to the airport. But it made me definitely want to travel more in Algeria. Wonderful people, amazing city.
A great big cloud blew through town
Mosque in the Casbah
Got yelled at for taking this photo by a soldier. Serious police presence on the street

Nice apartment buildings
The hill is steep
But it rewards you with great shots everywhere you look
