Horse Fly, Scaptia sp. (Tabanidae)

Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, Prov. Pichincha, Ecuador

Long-beaked horse flies (subfamily Pangoniinae) can feed from tubular flowers using their slender proboscis, which in some species can be nearly as long as the body. Scaptia species have a shorter beak than most other South American genera.
