These are common inhabitants of a variety of lentic (still water) and lotic (flowing water) aquatic habitats. They are predators, and larger species such as Dytiscus can tackle small fish and amphibians. Predacious diving beetles swim with powerful strokes of their paddle-like hind legs, and replenish their air supply by breaking the surface film with the tip of the abdomen.
