Water Boatmen can occur in great abundance in both lotic (flowing) and lentic (still) aquatic environments. They are primarily herbivores, feeding on diatoms and algae, which they scoop up with spoon-shaped forelegs and process with their unusually stout rostrum (beak). They may also scavenge detritus, and some will eat small animals as well.
