Water fleas are minute crustaceans that are abundant in the calm waters of ponds and lakes. They swim with the second of two pairs of antennae, which are sometimes branched, as in Daphnia, the most familiar water flea in classrooms and laboratories. Cladocerans feed on microorganisms and are in turn an important food item for many aquatic organisms.
