Spittlebug nymphs protect themselves with a foamy mass, created by mixing waste fluid with air blown from their anus. Their "spittle" are commonly seen on weeds, where the adults also feed. These insects are quick to jump away when disturbed.

Traditionally family Cercopidae, a number of genera have been placed in their own families, such as Aphrophoridae and Clastopteridae.
