Ground beetles are a commonly encountered family of almost entirely terrestrial predators. Many are nocturnal and hide beneath rocks or logs during the day. Some patrol shorelines, while others frequent foliage. A few are used as biological control agents, the most familiar being the Fiery Searcher (Calosoma scrutator) and Caterpillar Hunter (C. sycophanta).
