The Mighty Zeus

Troy, Mich.

Though I am an editor on the word side, I have had my photographs published at every newspaper
I have ever worked at. I started working at the Detroit Free Press toward the end June and this is my
first published photo in the print edition. It ran 3 columns wide by 11.5 inches deep as the centerpiece
on the Metro page. The photo was taken Sunday at a local Petco store, which was offering an opportunity
for people and their pets to be photographed next to Zeus, a Great Dane who is the world's tallest dog,
according to Guinness Book of World Records. Hundreds of people showed up for the event. This cropped shot
of a 5-year-old boy standing next to Zeus was one of my favorites. It was a difficult shooting situation -
long, dark storage room and the pet store lighting setup was a couple of halogen work lamps. To say the least,
the lighting sucked. I tried to use a flash, but wasn't happy with the results. So I pumped up the ISO on my 5d Mark II
to 1600, and shot at 1/60th of a second, with my Canon 24-105 mm lens wide open. As the newspaper hawkers of old
used to say, Read all about it.
