West Winnipeg

West Winnipeg

The West Winnipeg territory has never had a successful nest however it was one of six hack sites in 1991 and is a very popular annual stop-over roost for migrating peregrines both in the spring and fall.

2006 - the territory was held by a Lucy, a Radisson female and Obi-Wan, a Brandon male, but no nesting was attempted. Since both birds were only a year old, this was not unexpected.

2007 - Lucy & Ivy, two Radisson siblings, tried unsuccessfully to nest. After their eggs were lost they remained in the area but didn't defend it.

2008 - a male I had tentatively identified as Ivy (after he was escorted out of the Radisson territory) was paired up with a very nice looking female with a breeder's or ring-band which can't be read unless you are only inches away.

2009 - April 12 - Ivy and his ring-banded female are back and defending the territory from all comers. Another female peregrine wandered into the territory and she was quickly evicted by both Ivy & his (as yet un-named) female. We who were watching in a nearby parking lot were also subjected to such close scrutiny by the female in particular, that when they have young (and they spent much of today copulating) she is going to be the bird we watch out for when banding the chicks.

WE WILL BE POSTING PHOTOS SHORTLY !!!
