White-rumped Sandpiper; BD: Long wing projection, long dark
streaks on breast extending to upper flanks, slightly down-curved bill with red
spot at base, mostly gray scale coloration. This bird is in transition to
breeding plumage. In full breeding plumage there will be a rufous wash on the
cheek and crown and rufous edges to the upper scapulars. Sibley shows light
rufous was on the edges of the lower scapulars as well. The birds we
actually see locally are drabber, probably due to being incompletely molted.
White-rumped sandpiper has a unique, long, slender, extended shape and long bill
for a peep.
