The two purplish creatures in this picture are Shingle Urchins (or Helmet Urchins, Colobocentrotus atratus), a species of sea urchin in the family Echinometridae. In Hawaii, where we photographed these, on the Big Island, they are known as "kaupali" or "cliff-clinging," according to Wikipedia.
