heart_of_Birmingham

I called this "heart of Birmingham" (Alabama) because, sadly, this was the state of many buildings downtown. The city was like a ghost town. Birmingham offered several fun things to do, so hopefully it is on the build.

Yea! I got to go to the area with the shops and restaurants, and it was fun! I'm glad that the downtown will be revitalized. So historical!

Yes, scenes like this are common among some of the older buildings of Downtown Birmingham, but that is quickly changing (but the entire city is not a "ghost town"--Southside, Birmingham's "midtown" area, is full of life). A loft district is already thriving on the east side of Downtown along Morris, 1st, and 2nd Avenues. A multi-block redevelopment of a former public housing site is well underway. Several new restaurants have opened in the past year. And within the last month, 3 of the largest vacant buildings--City Federal Bldg., Cabana Hotel, and the former Pizitz department store--have been purchased by developers who plan to renovate and convert them to condominium buildings (and sales have been phenomenal). Come back in a year or two, and you might not recognize Downtown Birmingham.
