From the middle of this stage, the Sultan would stand and speak. Directly ahead in a straight line is Malioboro Street, the shopping center of Yogyakarta, and beyond that, Mt. Merapi volcano. It's also something of an acoustical 'center' where the Sultan's voice will echo carry straight through to his followers' ears.
