Mystery Melon

Here's my latest discovery at the market, but I don't know the name.
Those are mineola oranges in the next bin up, to provide a size comparison.
I believe that these are melons. The skin is rough and a little flaky. There's
a greenish caste to the skin. The fruits have the same general shape as mangoes,
but they're much larger and somewhat tougher. If you know the name, please share it.
Thanks for your help in my continuing education about the good foods of the world.

Maybe a relative of the sapodilla, the Mamey Sapote? These guys are pretty big---easily five or six inches (around 18 cm) in diameter. The oranges in this photo are a little on the small side, but MUCH smaller than the melons.

Thanks again, An, for sending me in the right direction. I'm going to go back to the store to reread the sign!

Hi Suzanne, this fruit could be Sapodilla, a kind of melon that has a soft, brownish meat . I am trying to guess too.

Unknown to me as well. Who knew the market was educational too?

You must persuade your friendly grocer to put labels on his stock - I can hardly bear the suspense until the answer is known!
