Fire Water

This photo comes with a story. It was a beautiful evening. I had already been shooting at another place for several hours, so I was excited about the sunset reflection, but tired and careless.

This is not a shallow puddle of water. It is a drainage ditch one meter deep. So much melted snow had filled the ditch that it looked like any other puddle, just a few centimeters deep.

Along with the beautiful firey sunset, the moon was rising in the sky. I wanted to try to capture both the sunset and the rising moon in a single reflection from the water.

I was concentrating so hard on trying to get the right angle to catch the moon and sunset, that I lost my footing on the edge of the water. The soggy snow gave way, and I fell right into the ditch. I was almost entirely submerged---but I am proud to say that I held my precious camera high above my head. It didn't get wet. My house is across the street so even wet and cold, I could walk home quickly. Only my pride was damaged.

I think that the lesson was to avoid being greedy. You can have the sun, or you can have the moon. But if you insist on having the sun AND the moon, you will only get a bath.

This stopped me in my tracks--it reminds me so much of Escher's "Puddle" that it's scary!!

Such a wonderful soggyness! The contrast of visual fire amidst what appears to be
a prevailing coldness is wonderful and another miracle of nature that did not go
unnoticed. Sharp eyes Soenda. Kudos for the title as well. VOTED
