For decades, volunteer firefighters in the Dutch
village of Ulft have come from every walk of life.

At his summer job at the local foundry, my husband
remembered what would happen when the fire siren
blared. Workers throughout the factory immediately
laid down their tools. They ran outside, hopped on their
bicycles and rode like the wind to report for duty
at the firehouse.
