Galapagos Islands 2009

A phrase we heard quite often "A trip of a lifetime" certainly held true for us.
We booked a 10 day tour of the Galapagos Islands through GAP Adventures. They hired the newly launched catamaran called the "Queen Beatriz" to take us on this incredible voyage. GAP arranges accommodation in Quito the day before and the day after visiting the islands, thus it is referred to as a "10 day Superior Class Voyage".

The Galapagos Islands are one of the 'youngest land masses on earth".
The Galapagos Archipelago has ~ 13 islands, amongst many islets and rocks located just south of the equator about 600 miles west of Ecuador in South America.

Molten magma oozes through the floor of the Pacific Ocean, cools and gradually rises to form the islands. The active "hotspot" is currently below the youngest and most active volcano on Fernandina. It erupted on April 11, 2009, shortly after we were there. The most recent eruption prior to April 11 was ~ 4 years ago.

The photos are organized in sub galleries according to the days that we were there. The first photo for each day contains a *BLOG* for the day.
