2017: Change in plans - the nesting site is unsuitable!
The pair returned and nested in the region of previous nests. This year they did not take their cygnets to the far eastern edge of the property. Instead they foraged within an area of tall grasses and cattails in the SE region of the property. We did not see much of them for this reason, however; a neighbour reported seeing the pair with 3 large cygnets at the end of August.
The property was sold in the autumn of 2020. At that time we reflected on the nesting activity since 2018 and with feedback from our neighbour, it appears that the trumpeter swans are no longer nesting in this area, likely due to predation of the cygnets! There is an overabundance of turtles in the marsh. An example of how the marsh is a dynamic entity and will evolve under nature guidance.
