2015 Trumpeter Swans return & are 'down on their luck' even more so this year! Hatched 7 eggs, all cygnets predated

This was a year with a few surprises ... male swan no longer had a leg band & sustained an injury that prevented him from putting weight on his foot when walking. The pair nested in the same area as last year ... close to the road and easily seen until the shrubs leafed out. They hatched 7 cygnets. The pair brought their newly hatched cygnets across the road into our marsh within hours of hatching. The family were seen close to the road where the creek is. At one point, the pair and 5 cygnets sat on the road and would not let our vehicle by. We sat there for ~ 30 minutes and then inched it within 2 feet of the swans and they still would not move ..... These swans have lived in the wild and are not accustomed to interacting with us) we had to move the tires back 'n forth into the gravel to get them to move. All 7 cygnets depredated. We do not know if the male will be able to 'lift off' this fall once the creek freezes over.
