It was a cold harsh winter and the Trumpeter Swans were absent during the month of January. The first time they were seen / heard was on Feb 13, 2013. At one point in time we saw 7 Trumpeter Swans in the area. They spread along the creek and were also seen across the road. The cold temperatures continued but that did not stop a pair of Trumpeter Swans from starting a family. A pair were seen nesting on the south side of Concession 3 until the middle of May. On May 25th, a pair and 5 cygnets were seen swimming in the SE side of the marsh. This has been a cool wet spring and the water level in the creek remains high. It was interesting to watch the swans shuffle their feet in the muddy bottom to stir up food for the cygnets. We have not yet confirmed the identity of the pair as their legs bands are not visible. The pink in one of the swan's bill is curious.
