2009: Trumpeter Swans return to raise 3 cygnets (hatched 6).
TS # 933 and an 'untagged' male returned to the area. They disappeared from view until the cygnets were a few days old. Their nesting area is across the road and in the SW corner of the marsh.
The pair started out with 6 cygnets, and within days the numbers dropped to 5, then 4 and last ..3. The third death was uncalled for. The good sized cygnet was found at the side of the road ..its wing was broken. A kind neighbour rescued it and took it to a vet who pinned the wing. Details are sketchy, but unfortunately, the cygnet died.
We had an unusual experience a few days after the cygnet was hit by a car. It was ~ 9:30 am and the Trumpeters were in the creek calling and calling. We finally went down the laneway to investigate. The 2 adults were west of the laneway in the creek. Shortly after, the 3 cygnets came out from the reeds. The family searched for food & preened while we pulled out our chairs and we watched. Approximately 20 minutes later, the 2 adults flew out of the creek and circled the marsh calling and calling. We wondered if they were looking for the injured cygnet.
**note** the lack of tag for the male (formerly #934) made us wonder if #933 had a new mate.
