Both are ok. In the tighter crop, I don't like that his eye is dead center. I would somehow crop it different to put the eye off to the side, with black background you can always just add more background to it.
THe other one is cool, kinda laid back, I like that.

Yeah, how do you choose? I think I agree with Joan for the same reasons. Adds greater context. But they are both exceptional photographs.

I guess it would depend on what you were using it for. To me the t-shirt does say something about him...not into ironing, laid back, kinda matches the scruf on the face...so it does say something about him. Be interesting to see them in BW.

I always prefer the tighter framing unless the clothes or body language tell a story. The headshot is more intimate. That said, I like both of these :-)
