RUGGED MAKEOVER

After Karen turned us on to the photoshop mama tutorial I immediately tried it on a photo of my niece.
As good as the technique worked, it is not fresh young faces that I have difficulty with.
I don't know about the rest of you, but for me, the most difficult portraits to retouch
are those of either elderly faces with great character lines, rugged faces with a fair amount of stubble or
pitting or spotty color variations, and faces that have florid coloring.
I wanted to put the photoshop mama tutorial to the test on one of these faces and I searched my hard drive
for such photos. Then I remembered the shots I took of Mr. Clinton last spring and thought he was a perfect candidate
for this retouching test as he has a rugged face as well as pink skintones and his face is fairly spotty.
I wanted to see if I could retouch his face while maintaining the integrity of his ruddy and rugged look.

Here, then, is my attempt at cleaning up the President but not so much that he looks freakish or unrecognizable.
I will be curious to hear what people think and what they would have done differently.
It would also be interesting for me to hear what sort of facial retouching presents challenges for you.

I think I prefer the right one (no pun intended)

This is really well done also! It is always a challenge with high resolution DSLRs, to strike a balance when doing portraits of older individuals. Every imperfection is glaring, but over-softening is just as bad. You did this one just right :-)

Great job with the touching up. But I like him even with his rugged face :p

We'll all be lining up for a redo soon...

nicely done... difficult to do it with a well known person as people would prefer reality;;; your re-touch is excellent! where is this tutorial you are talking about?

What a thrill to see Bill. I like your rework, prefer the original although I like the added warmth to the redo.

I'm not surprised you handled the the retouching so expertly. Really amazing. But, for what it's worth, I prefer the original just because of its greater realism.

ok

the re-work is GREAT

you softened it JUST enough to make it better, but not enough to pretend he is 30. This is a great technique that dermatologists might look into....
great work, Liza
