NEW RECRUIT

Here's another from the firefighter's training class. I am eager to get
honest critiques of this one as it would help me a great deal.
I accidently shot this way underexposed but since the kid is so great looking
I wanted to see if I could save the photo. There was no getting around it being
grainy due to the underexposure. The question is whether or not it works here.

All opinions would be most appreciated. If you don't like it, that's fine, I am
interested in hearing your thoughts.

thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to respond.

This is exactly the same thing I do for under exposure or un-savable colors. I'd say keeper.

Excellent. Looks like film.

I think it is outstanding, Liza, and the funny thing is I had the very same thought as Karen. Somehow it looks like a vintage photo. Well done. Glad you were able to save it.

The grain works so well with the B&W treatment... And make him seem much older than his years..

I like the treatment very much. It gives the shot the look of reportage, which works for me here.
It also makes me feel very old to think that "child" is in training to be a fireman. Of course, my boot camp pictures tell a similar story.

Honestly Liza, I think this came out well. The black and white treatment saved it, and the graininess gives it a sense of being very serious despite his huge grin.

the grainy effect works because of the monochrome. exposure is ok with the work.

Terrific shot. The grain and tone work real well for me.
Nice Work.

Liza, this is a great portrait!
I think the grain adds to the over all
VERY nicely done!

I was a fire fighter for nine years; I wish I had a picture of me this good! It works very well!

The toning and grainy works for me. For a minute I thought it was Amelia Earhart. The up angle on the shot is good, and you've captured the kid's spirit in the great smile.

My husband is a firefighter and I've seen a lot of photos of firefighters in gear but I really like this one - it is a little different. I like the grainy quality in conjunction with the black and white. It has given me some inspiration.
