Battery Nash, Ft. Ward

Fort Ward, Bainbridge Island, WA view map

Named for Revolutionary War hero, General Francis Nash, Battery Nash was the main armament guarding Rich Passage, the main entrance to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA.
Battery Nash was a 3 gun emplacement of 8" D.C. (Disapearing Carrage) guns. Unlike most, (if not all), of the other Puget Sound Coastal Artillery sites, Battery Nash is now private property.

I first discovered Battery Nash when I was 17, and a friend took me there. It was pretty impressive to walk though a forest and suddenly come upon a 30 foot high wall of concrete.

Scott,
has anyone ever done a modern book of the defence forts of Puget Sound? It would make a very interesting theme study now that most of them are parks, wouldn't it? You have a great start with the photos you have posted here.
