Hieronymus Bosch (Jeroen van Aken, ca 1450-1516), The Last Judgment, triptych (1504-08), right wing, 163 x 60 cm.
Weltgerichtstriptychon
Akademie für bildenden Künste, Vienna
The right wing represents the Hell, where the army of Satan swarms to attack the damned, the beginning of eternal torment. Burning pits and furnaces are shown as well as lakes and rivers in which the damned are immersed. Vaguely anthropomorphic devils and traditional toads, adders and dragons are on the scene, crawling over the rocks or gnawing at the vital parts of their victims. Many bizarre fusions of animal and human elements, sometimes combined with inanimate objects, are displayed in a diabolic terrifying chaos.
