Medium-sized nocturnal owl well distributed over most parts of sub-Saharan Africa. By day rests in a tree showing prominent ear-tufts held erect and eyes closed to slits. When disturbed, may adopt a body-erect posture but when active, displays a distinctive white facial disc.
