Indicator maculatus, Spotted Honeyguide

Marakissa, Gambia

Like other honeyguides insectivorous but also feeding on beeswax and known for their brood parasitism. Chicks hatch with a hooked appendage on the bill, aimed to kill the young of the host. The host of this species is probably the Buff-spotted Woodpecker to which it bears a remarkable plumage resemblance, while also mimicking the latter's calls (Barlow & Wacher).
