Born c. 1525, Pieter Bruegel the Elder was a Netherlandish Renaissance painter and printmaker from Brabant.

9 September 2019 marks the 450th anniversary of his death and therefore, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna is staging an exclusive exhibition of his oeuvre, which is to run from October 2018 to January 2019.

Best known for his landscapes and his peasant scenes, Bruegel’s grandeur, however, is most palpable in his heart-stirring imagery of allegorical compositions, where he combines religion, folklore and humanism often - in the steps of Hieronymys Bosch - moralising and constantly urging the viewer to reflect on the multilayered complexity of the image contents.
