Wooden Church in Haczow

The church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Archangel Michael in Haczow is the largest wooden Gothic church in Europe and the oldest wooden church in Poland.

This is also the largest wooden Gothic church with figural polychrome paintings from 1494 of unique value, the oldest known monumental painted decorations in wooden churches. Dendrology tests confirmed that the trees used to construct the church were cut in 1459 - 1460. The church is situated in the center of the Haczow village, which is the seat of the communal authorities, close to the Krosno-Sanok road, around 10 km southwest of Brzozow. In its vicinity, there is a XX century stone parish church.

The precise date of constructing the church in Haczow is unknown. The oldest parts of the church date back to the end of XIV century. The preserved sanctuary is the first church constructed in Haczow. In 1494, the vaults and the walls of the church were decorated with monumental polychrome (discovered in 1955, preserved in most part to this day), which confirms the existence of the church at the end of the XV century. During the Tatar Invasion in 1624, the church was damaged, and later, completely renovated and enlarged (the present-day tower-belfry was constructed, the undercuts surrounding the building were added , as well as the tower with the ave-bell). In the 1780's, subsequent work was done.
The Urbanski family founded the Virgin Mary Chapel (annexed to the nave from the north), the vestry was enlarged, and in the interiors, a new vault was constructed, wooden pillar supports, dividing the body of the nave and new furnishings were founded. In the second half of the XIX century, the XV–century wall paintings were over painted, and replaced with an Eclectic polychrome. In XIX and XX century, the church was frequently restored, but no major image changes were introduced. After the new stone church was built (finished in 1944), the old church was abandoned, and most of its equipment removed.

Only in the 1960's complex conservation works started in the deteriorating church; this ended with re-consecrating of the sanctuary in 2000.
