Long Beach, my home town, like all of the coast communities, was "hammered" by Katrina. I ventured to the zone south of the CSX railroad tracks (roughly 3/4 of a mile inland) to check on several friend's homes. I didn't have much time to take photographs (I was there for about twenty minutes)as the authorities, understandably, weren't in the mood to deal with picture taking "tourists". I was stunned by what I saw. These photos do not begin to reveal the extent and totality of the destruction.
I know it's tough to walk through places you remember so well
only to see them forever changed by nature.
I spent some time photographing neighborhoods devastated by
wildfires two years ago and it's a sobering experience to see
the results.
Hope things get back to a semblance of normalcy in the near
future.

Sorry for your loss Steve. I know there are many memories that have been erased with this storm. I surely hope you didn't loose any friends or family.
Thanks Dan... your presence here is greatly appreciated. Your services, along with all of your fellow guardsmen, have been invaluable.

I was just in Gulfport,MS ( next town over from Longbeach ), as a National Guard Soldier. The people of Gulfport and Longbeach are wonderful, spirited people. They will overcome, rebuild, and be better people than they already are. Thank you all so much for your hospitality - dispite your enormous loss. I will never get over my mission in the Gulf Coast. I am a changed man as a result of my experiences in Mississippi.
