Eric is wrong about how the tracks were moved. It was by the in coming surge that damaged the tracks. As you can see, they are wasted to the right of the photo and the
gulf is to the left at this point. I know this because I'm am the CSXT locomotive engineer that laid the slag to rebuild the tracks. I have a similair photo taken by our Special Agent days after the damage.

This set of tracks is approximately one-half mile from the beach and roughly 15 to 20 feet above sea level. The washout appears to have occurred as the storm surge receded. The tracks were repaired and trains were able to run again in January or early February, about 5 months after Katrina.
