Day four of the ride was from Diamond Lake to Dorena Lake, near Cottage Grove. The first 40+ miles were mostly downhill, paralleling the beautiful upper Umpqua River. But those were followed by the most grueling climb of the entire week; 12 - 15 miles on grades sometimes bumping up against 10%. And the ensuing downhill was treacherous, with several miles of 10% grade on a narrow forest service road. Some members of Team Rubber Chicken were held at the top of the hill for over an hour because there were no emergency vehicles available to respond in case of an accident; all ambulances in the area were already responding to bicycle crashes. We never heard whether or not anyone was seriously injured.
