Work From My Day Job "Perazzi MX20 SC3"

Some of you know I work for a major US sporting goods retailer. My day job is to photograph higher end firearms like this $13000 Perazzi shotgun.

This type of product photography isn't too artistic but it is challenging. The biggest challenge is the lighting. I'm shooting surfaces that shine and tend to reflect and wash out. Getting the shadowing in the bottom of the engraving so you can see it makes life interesting. I didn't pick the background ... I kind of don't like the color. Of course here I'm just trying to represent the product so someone will buy it.

Oh yeah I'm still shooting pictures everyday, just not always posting them here.

Fitz, This fine shotgun runs $13,000.

Here is the add. Remember I only shoot for the Lehi store and not everything there is stuff I have photographed. (yeah some of the photos suck...I'm not taking the blame)

Bill its a great product shot. What is the weapon worth? I had to Google it to figure out what it was.

I have two strobes. One has a soft box attached to provide fill and highlights along the top to stock and barrel. The other strobe has a grid installed. I point it up into a reflector that I move to arrange and control where I get shadows. I sue a total of three reflectors one set opposite the soft box to provide fill. One above and one on the end to fill and control the shadows.

Is there a "mesh screen" over your lighting sources? I've seen this used in many "shiny" applications to reduce the reflection effects....??? Just a thought, other than using your own gear,,, which would be a productivity enhancement, thus getting additional company reimbursement??? ;-))

Bill, I'm not a gun person, but I've always enjoyed yours posts from your personal collection of guns, the way you stage them really shows them off as works of art. The craftsmanship on this gun is amazing, I can't imagine a person that would buy this is just going to use it for hunting, they'll surely be displaying it in some way. It seems to me your boss is missing the boat by having you take shots like this, a higher end client would certainly appreciate the more artistic images that you are capable of.

It the companies camera. Ok, the Nikon takes decent pictures but the buttons are all in the wrong places. I hate having to wade through the menus to make some changes. Anyway I'll stick with Canon for my own work, thank you.

Ack!!! Nikon even? Bill's made the switch!
