Black Morels 05_26_11.jpg

No great art with today's photo. We made a quick trip to pick Black Morels this morning before I head to work. We made a decent haul for the time put in collecting them.

Someone asked if the morels are edible. The answer is, yes! They are a great mushroom for eating.

Great picture, I love morels and we go every spring, mostly in Idaho where I'm from. You can dry them too, if you pick too many of them they're very easy to dry and reconstitute. we have also dipped them in flour and frozen them, that also works great. then you can fry them right out of the freezer bag.

Reminds me of an old joke my son told me:
"Why did they invite the mushroom to the party?"
"Because he was a fungi!"

Earl,

we've done our homework and are confident that these are true morels, they are not that hard to tell apart. Thanks for the concern and the heads up!

You're both braver than I am!

Also re edibility: make sure you do your homework, because there is a species called the false morel which is poisonous. The good and the bad aren't all that hard to tell apart (in the bad, the cap is detached from the stem at the bottom), but check out some websites first. Better safe than sorry.

Yum. Makes my mouth water. Fried up in a little butter, with a bit of green onion... or boiled then smothered in some boiled cream with a bit of onion...yum.

I almost feel guilty for collecting so many of them this morning. But it was so much fun every time we spotted one, especially the bigger ones. Guess we'll be having morels as our main course for supper tonight!
