ANZAC Day 2008- Lone Pine Memorial Service

After the Dawn service it was a 3.5k walk, mostly up hill, to the Lone Pine service. We left the ANZAC Cove site and marched along the road to the access trail to Lone Pine , 20 meters from the road the uphill part started and for the next 1.5Ks a snake of people made its way way up the hill. A bugger of a climb surrounded by so many people the only saving grace we didn't have to do it under fire as was done 93 yrs ago, made it to the top after so many stop/starts. made my way into the stands and found a position which would give me good photo coverage and had breakfast- the tour provided a breakfast box which was fun trying to make up a roll in strong winds. The Before service program was enjoyable with different stories and histories of the units involve. They also asked for people from different groups and units to stand , each one was given a hearty cheer and applause. The service started with the traditional marching on of the Guard, over shadowed by Turkish security, fully loaded and ready for any unwanted attention, the security although time consuming was satisfying to know it was their and real.
