On stop 3 of our Colorado trip, Bill & I visited the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, outside of Montrose. This was the picture gallery that almost wasn't....thanks to strong lightning & thunderstorms in the vicinity. When we arrived in the morning, we were greeted by a heavy fog-mist, and very little light. Our patience paid off, unveiling a little-known gem of a park---a 1/2 mile deep, narrow gorge, carved in granite by the fast-moving Gunnison river. (The visitor center quoted that it takes 100 yrs for the river to carve out 1-inch, so you can do the math!) Stop by the south rim if you're ever in the area--you can't help but think "wow" when you see it in person. In Montrose, be sure to check out the Smuggler's brewpub for post-hike refreshments.
