I was working at 140 West Street, across Vesey Street from the Toweers that morning. The horror, and yet the unreality of it all (as seen through thick, reinforced windows as it happened, and later from the corner of West and Barclay as the south tower fell and people were jumping from the north tower) has left a burning mark on my soul. After leaving the site, as a tech specialist for Verizon, I went up to a site on Varick Street, where I met up with a few of the other people from my office. We spent the rest of the day setting up lines for the police and monitoring the switches at 140 West St., which continued to work through it all. After 7 WTC fell, we left around 6:30 PM, a couple of us Jersey guys walking up to Washington Square to the subway and took the train home to New jersey. THe 4 swtiches in 140 West Street cotinued running until the backup diesels ran out of fuel later in the evening, even as parts of one of the switches were left dangling through a hole in the floor caused by a steel beam from 7 WTC ripping through the east wall of 140 West Street! I will never forget the sight of the second plane zooming up behind the buildings (silently- like an unreal movie) and the huge ball of flame and all the debris floating down after it struck the South tower.
