29th October 2006

Took the ‘new’ Leica M2 out for a test run, as I have a week’s money-back trial.
It’s proving a huge learning curve. Especially working out
what is my ignorance and what is the second-hand camera.
I grew up using film SLR, bu this Rangefinder business is something else!

It doesn’t have a light meter, and I haven’t ordered a new hand held meter yet.
So I had to use the light meter in my head.

Finished a roll and went off to have a rest in a café... Then realised the
café was quite busy and ‘interesting’. I noticed something was going on at the
table right next to me.

I had to shoot blind. Turned the camera sideways, pointed upwards and fired blind,
while desperately looking in the opposite direction! This was the result.

Basically, this was the best shot of the day. So you can imagine…
(btw the lightleak at the bottom is because I forgot to include the
rod in the developing tank.)

I have to work out how long I give my M2 learning curve over the foibles of a
second-hand camera and a lens…

wow - great shot, especially given the circumstances you described! Must have been quite a thrill when you saw the result. It's not quite the same when you get instant feedback on the back of the camera. A bit like waiting for the expensive 70-200 f2.8 to arrive in the post....
