AVRO Arrow - night flight

"High Flight"

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

John Gillespie Magee, Jr. 1941

I will NEVER understand the decision making mind of Diefenbaker. To can a project is one thing but to destroy evrything these Men and women lived, breathed and worked for to be the Elite in the world.

This is tragedy

Not too dissimilar to the also ill-fated TSR-2.

Very nice photo. I have studied in detail this story about the Avro. What a shame what happened, and the same kind of stories happen even today.

What a shock!

I hadn't thought of the Arrow since perhaps 1959.

Sometimes you see something that just is ***yours*** and as a 2nd year aeronautical engineering student in 1958, the Arrow was mine.

Sandi, how did you become involved with this lovely piece of engineering?
