A Civil Rights-era icon, the Edmund Pettus Bridge spans the Alabama River and was the scene of historic 1965 clash between Civil Rights activists and police. Activists were beaten viciously by police as they tried to march peacefully to the State Capitol in Montgomery. A later march was ultimately successful.
