The windward lowlands of Maui, below 2,000 feet (610 m) on north- to northeast-side is roughly perpendicular to direction of prevailing trade winds. It has frequent trade wind-induced showers. The skies are often cloudy to partly cloudy. While at the same time, the leeward lowlands in the south- to southwest-side is sunny and hot.
