Remember Simon…

I remember Simon in his mid-teens, flying kites on Hout Bay beach. Not simple sport kites, but the complex multi-line ones that are difficult and take persistence to learn to fly well.
I remember Simon exercising this skill in various events – quietly and confidently achieving his own aspirations, his own goals. Simon loved kites, and his mastery of even the most demanding of them showed his ability to excel in any chosen pursuit.

I remember Simon sharing his skill in handicrafts – he so liked to share his enthusiasms with others – he made the most beautiful knives as a hobby. He mastered even the metallurgy and was not satisfied until he achieved perfection: The design, the function, the steel, the blade, the handle; every aspect, even the sheath. Each a collector’s work of art, carrying his personal distinction.

I remember flying gliders with Simon among the mountains of the Cape….

I remember Simon was at school at the time; I remember Simon was often off with groups of friends & family hiking in those same mountains…

I remember Simon had such capacity to fill his life, and live it to the full: how much he achieved in such a short time.

I remember Simon always putting others first.

I remember sharing just a very small window in Simon’s young life.

I remember Simon as just simply such an all round nice guy.

Remember Simon? Simon is someone I will never forget.

Simon, never have I met someone with your passion for life.
I have only ever heard kind words from you.
You are deeply missed, our memories will never be forgotten.
Here's to you, and your new journey.... Until we meet again.

Haai Mev Wessels, ek onthou hierdie storie wat Mev vertel. Shoe, ek kan dit nog steeds nie glo nie.
Some of us met on Hout Bay beach the night after the incedent. Matthew asked us all to be there. It was a perfect setting to remember Simon, as I can't imagine he would have been anywhere else but with us on Hout Bay beach!

Jy is en sal altyd my held wees. Marieta

Noooooooo!

I just discovered this this morning and I'm in a complete state of shock.

Simon was one of the genuinely nicest guys I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. He was a joy to be around simply because of his lust for life, and his delight in sharing that with others.

He was always guiding, helping, and showing groups of people the wonder of our outdoor environment, whether it was climbing, kayaking or hiking.

In his too short life, he has touched the lives of so many people. So many of us are living our lives differently because of Simon’s influence. He’s had such an impact.

He was and will continue to be an inspiration.

Dear parents & friends of Simon,
Our prayers and thoughts are with you at this time. Our son Scott was with Simon on this trip and called us yesterday with the terrible news. He has spoken of Simon often, had great respect for his kayaking skills, enjoyed his friendship and will miss him terribly.

Dear Fiends of our son Simon,
It is with great sadness that we record that Simon drowned while kayaking in NSW, Australia. As you will known he has doing what he loved and his passing brings with it great sadness to those that have shared with him.
Please send him your love, light and energy to him as he embarks on his next life.

Wow, great climbing pictures! My husband and I are avid climbers in the western US, and it always amazes me how people are doing the same thing we are all over the world! Cape Town sounds so exotic and remote, but there you guys are, ripping it up on awesome hard sport climbs!! Australia has always been one of our dream climbing trip destinations. Maybe in a year or two I'll be hittin' ya up for beta!

One question, and maybe I should just read more, but how do the ratings convert to the Yosemite Decimal System? Thanks!!

Hi, Simon-
I'm trying to see if it is possible to use this photo in a brochure to promote a workshop for psychologist that I am doing, on happiness and enjoyment. I am going to use a rock climbing photo on the cover, I just don't know if it will be yours. I found it on google-images and that led me to ABC-of-rock-climbing.com and eventually here. By-the-by, I will be teaching my workshop in Australia next August (4 different cities)!
