Girraween 6 to 8 Sep 03

A few days ago I bought Rob Rankin's Secrets of the Scenic Rim. Like most people, after flicking to the area I was interested in - The Climbing at Girraween - I paged on back to the photos section of the book. ALong with the beautiful photos of blackboys at sunrise and other pretty things there is another amazing picture. It shows a red band of cliff about 60m high and a few hundred meters long. At first I thought it was a joke, how can a cliff like this exist near brisbane and not have the hordes at least drooling over climbing on it?

It turns out that the cliff is in Red Rock Gorge in Sundown National Park which would be less than an hours drive away from the weekends climbing destination - Girraween.

Late friday night I drove around Brissie pickign up part of the team for our foray into granite slabland. First I saved Jerome from his housemates, then off we went to fashionable Paddo' to pick up Claire and finally we collected Steve. In Warwick, Steve, our guide for the trip took over the driving to get us into Girraween. Somewhere close to midnight we tumbled out of Daisy (my mom's car) and into the F*1#'ing freezing mountain night air. Tents where setup and bodies where in sleeping bags before you could say "Jack Flash".

Saturday morning one by one we joined the Kangaroos in the land of the living. Glen, who had also arrived at some point in the night wondered if he should go over and shake Benno's sleeping bag as he wasn't sure if Benno was still alive. Claire joined us too and commented that there had been ice on her sleeping bag, BRRRrrr..... Cold to say the least....
