Found several Wood Ant Nests in Lorraine, Eastern France.
Some of the nests were probably almost 2 metres high.
It was fascinating to try and watch them hauling bits of wood and pine cones etc around.
I attempted to take a range of photos showing their different behaviours but, not surprisingly, they didn't really want me around that close. I ended up with a considerable number of ant bites and a few good photos - probably more bits than good pics ...
