Canada France Observatory - 13,700 feet above

Big Island, Hawaii

The Canada France Observatory (optical and infrared) sits atop of Mauna Kea, with 11 other observatories, at an elevation of over 13,700 feet. Temperatures year-round generally hover in the 20s, 30s and 40s. It can snow any time of the year although there generally is no snow after May. When snow does come, there can be traffic jams on the summit road with people travelling up to shovel snow to bring it down to the beach, others skiing down as far as they can go and carpooling it back to the top, and others just going up for the fun.

Hey Rick,

This almost looks like something out of the movie "Space Balls" And what is that white
stuff around it? Snow in Hawaii? That's a shocker! :)

Nifty photo!
