Off the beaten path lies the key to the beginnings of San Antonio, Texas. This is one of four Spanish frontier missions from which San Antonio sprung forth. Founded in 1720, it was built on the banks of the San Antonio River several miles to the south of the earlier mission of San Antonio de Valero, better know as the Alamo.
